Career Summary

1993 – Present Self employed Health, Safety and Environmental Consultant.
Assisting numerous companies in achieving proving and maintaining compliance with health safety and environmental legislation through development and integration of culture of safety; management systems and associated education and training. Use of standard techniques to measure and monitor occupational exposure and environmental emission levels.
These occupational hygiene aspects of work carried out include the carrying out of risk assessments for physical, chemical, biological and ergonomic hazards. Such risk assessments by definition include formulation of practical control methods following the hierarchy of control.
Additionally, measurement and monitoring, of contaminants combined with examination and testing of local exhaust ventilation is carried out as either standalone services or as an integrated part of the assessment procedures.
The range of organizations in which such work has been carried out include, metal surface finishing, woodworking, pharmaceuticals, paint and chemical manufacturers and processors, heavy and light engineering, boat building and commercial –office based organizations.
Environmental measurement monitoring has been carried out in a similar range of companies’ involving measurement and monitoring of emissions to land water and air.
Education and training of all levels of the workforce to risks, controls and duties forms a significant proportion of all such occupational hygiene – environmental related programs as does liaison with health care /medical and enforcement professionals.

New operation of consultancy firm – duties included sales and carrying out health safety and occupational hygiene investigations
1974 – 1984 Divisional Occupational Hygienist, British Steel Corporation Scotland.
Appointed to new position remit to set up and operate occupational hygiene service for all British Corporation works in the Scottish Division. Work initially problem solving progressively more proactive through
involvement with Divisional management, medical and safety professionals
1969 – 1974 Industrial Chemist – British Steel CorporationScotland.
After a period of training involved in process control analysis at junior level – progressing to assistant shift leader (Lanarkshire Steelworks). Transferred to integrated steelworks (Ravenscraig) initially work similar to previous progressing to solving plant operational problems and proactive involvement during process development and environmental issues.
